Biography

Susan Johnson Mumford M.A., moved to London from the USA in 2000. She opened Mumford Fine Art's Rooftop Gallery in the heart of the West End of London in Spring 2006.

Background. Between 2001-2004 Susan worked in several commercial art galleries, she gained her Masters of Art in Arts Management at Birkbeck College, University of London, and she acted as Curator for a group of aspiring London photographers. Furthermore she gained incremental management skills as a key player on Whole Foods Market's Retail Team between 2000-2004.

Having operated as a private fine art dealer for between December 2004 and March 2006, Johnson Mumford opened the doors to the Rooftop Gallery in April 2006, having debuted with the March 2006 St. James's exhibition, Art Is Why I Get Up in the Morning, featuring unseen & rare work by Elisabeth Frink. This exhibition was rated 'No. 1 exhibition of the Week' in the Times by celebrated art critic Rachel Campbell-Johnston. It was at the completion of this show that Mumford Fine Art settled into its current location in Soho.

She continues to organise an ongoing programme of exhibitions in the gallery, and now also acts as an Art Consultant in which she assesses, builds and maintains art collections for private clients. With her extensive network of arts professionals she is able to source provenance-strong artwork of most varieties.

Indeed, Susan's passion for inspiring others led her to start an Artist
Advisory service in 2009. She works with artists who are aspiring to be
commercially viable, full-time professional artists. She starts by
working one on one with an artist for eight hours over a two-month
period, and can offer ongoing assistance thereafter. Please Contact the gallery for more information.

In 2009 Johnson Mumford formed The Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD). The aim of the group is to facilitate collaborations and business between fellow women art dealers in the UK. In July 2010, a feature on Johnson Mumford and AWAD will be published in Network-She - an professional organisation for women who mean business. Women art dealers interested in participating in AWAD should Contact the gallery.

Combining her passion to inspire and develop others, Mumford started the Photography Collective at Mumford Fine Art in May 2010, in which she works with passionately enthusiastic amateur photographers to provide them focus and professional assistance. She meets with the group of photographers on a monthly basis, and the Collective will culminate with two group exhibitions in Spring 2011 at Mumford Fine Art (forming part of the Emerging Art programme). Four places are still available in the Photography Collective; please Contact the gallery for full details on becoming a member.

In February 2010 Johnson Mumford became an Assistant Director for Business Networking International (BNI), the referral organisation she joined in 2005 that has most significantly contributed to the development of her professional network. She will launch BNI London SW3 - a business generation group for high-calibre professionals - in late Summer 2010. If you are interested in learning more, please Contact the gallery.
