Surviving in the 21st Century Art World: Susan Mumford profiled by Network She

Gallery Director Susan Johnson Mumford is profiled in Network She magazine's Autumn/Winter 2010 edition. The article, From playing fields to art galleries, begins with Mumford's entrepreneurial flair that was displayed in early childhood, and travels to more recent experiences of surviving as a woman art dealer in the early 21st Century. The article also looks into Mumford's ideas behind the Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD), the organisation that Mumford founded in 2009. Click on the images below to view the full article.
Marcus McAllister: Weekly Sunday Tea featured in HiP Paris Blog

Marcus McAllister - Sunday Tea and Artwork in BelvilleMay 13, 2010 by Erica BermanClick here to see the Blog. On a recent Paris Sunday, Heather Stimmler Hall of Secrets in Paris invited me to
meet her for an afternoon tea at artist
Marcus McAllister’s
painting studio, in
the semi-underground and very
cool neighborhood of Goncourt. Meeting new people is always cool — but if artwork is involved, it’s even cooler. Goncourt is a hip, little, off-the-beaten-track quartier of the 10th, not far from the trendy Canal St martin, the up-and-coming St Marthe area and the Asian restaurants, outdoor markets
and exotic supermarkets of
Belleville.

I was met at the door by a smiling, American Marcus covered in paint with his cute doggie Grover at his heels. Marcus, an American from Arkansas, has
been in Paris for 14 years and living in this sunny 1st floor studio for 11 of those. Marcus has been hosting Sunday afternoon
tea and talks for 8 years now. Having crowds of strangers chez lui
has become second nature and a tradition he enjoys immensely. Marcus started the Sunday teas after first
participating in the Belleville open artist studios in his neighborhood. This is
where he discovered how much he loved having direct contact with the
public and being able to present his work to his audience. The
regularity of the tea get-togethers naturally progressed from that
realization. As Marcus started doing shows and building a reputation,
people started wanting to come by his studio to see his creations. In
the end, it became easier to simply set aside a time each week for that
purpose. Word of mouth and email updates now bring the Sunday crowd to
Marcus every week!

Marcus’ jovial open manner quickly
put me at ease and I was soon chatting away with an eclectic group of
Americans, Aussies and Frenchies. Subjects of conversation revolved
around how to adjust to life in France as a foreigner, where to dine in
Paris, how to decide what to do in Paris amidst so many cultural
options, and how Marcus’ neighborhood has been evolving over the years
into the funky, yet still fairly unknown, quartier it
is now.
The hours rolled by as people came
and went. Conversation was flowing, cute doggy Grover was rolling (he
does tricks!), tasty treats and tea were available
aplenty, and of course, the artwork was inspiring and tempting.
Sunday tea runs from 14:30-18h every Sunday that Marcus is in
Paris.152, rue St Maur 75011
Telephone: 01 49 29 08 94 Email: atelier@marcusmcallister.com Please contact Marcus for the
code, floor etc. Updates here: www.marcusmcallister.com

Some of Marcus’
neighborhood gems:
L’Autre
Café – 62, rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud
75011 Paris. According to Marcus this is a true French bistro
experience. Apparently, there even some vegetarian options. Wifi Point!
La Caravane –
35, rue Fontaine au Roi 75011 Paris – Telephone: 01 49 23 01 86
Belleville food and
produce market –
Tuesday and Saturday mornings until 1pm. Although Marcus rarely makes it
over, he highly recommends you check it out (and so do I). This market
is one of the cheapest and most diverse in Paris.

The Cavendish London Hotel installs London Landmarks painting

On 17th March, Mumford Fine Art installed Xavier Pick's 3 metre long, three-paneled painting 'London Landmarks' into the Cavendish London Hotel in Jermyn Street, St. James's. The painting took three months to complete and depicts London from a bird's eye view, highlights ranging from the Royal Albert Hall to the London Eye, or from St. Paul's to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. The artwork is a collage of images based on photographs with significant over-painting by Pick. Known for his London series for more than a decade, this piece highlights the artist's illustrative flair and his understanding of his city of residence. To see more images of Pick's London and Travel images click here. For information on the Cavendish London Hotel click here. Images of London Landmarks (2010) including before and after installation are displayed below.

Strong sales maintain for 20th Century British sculptor Dame Elisabeth Frink, CH RA (1930-93). The Jackdaw (editor David Lee) reports in the March/April 2009 issue: "What used to be called 'Modern British' art is bearing up considering market conditions. This has to do with the fact that its qualities are visible rather than theoretical. In recent sales Lowry and Frinks sold securely whilst others at least trod water."See available work & articles on the artist: Click on 'Artists' above, then 'Dame Elisabeth Frink'.Image below: Elisabeth Frink, Bird (1952), Bronze, Edn. of 6, Provenance Private Collection.

We're covered! The Fringe Report reviews the Thursday night Salon

Review by Brent CrudePoetry Night at the Mumford Gallery - Thursday 19 February 2009 - 18:30 (21:30)Every
Thursday night, in the intimate space of the Mumford Rooftop Gallery
(www.mumfordfineart.net) on D'Arblay Street in Soho, there's a small
gathering - a salon if you like. Those attending - not just invited
guests, anyone can come - have the opportunity to view the art on
display and to chat. There's entertainment too. Tonight, it's poetry
night. Susan Johnson Mumford,
who runs the Gallery, is an American. She's been running art shows in
the small space among Soho's rooftops for over three years. Despite the
recession, she's managed to make a success of selling art both from the
Gallery and at art shows. She also represents the estate of the British
sculptor Elisabeth Frink (1930-1993).Among the audience is American post-graduate student Rebecca Pohancenik. Rebecca
is researching aspects of the history of science, particularly those
related to the development of clocks. She is also promoting an
exhibition at the German Gymnasium from 5 March 09 - The Art of Lost Words (www.dexigner.com/graphic/news-g16886.html) - which she has been organising with her husband, designer and typographer Andreas Pohancenik. Also attending are writers Laura McGowan, Sally Crawford and (Joel says) would-be rock lyricist Joel Rockman. The poets reading tonight come from a range of directions, delivering work from the cerebral to the impassioned.Ben Gwalchmai,
a slight man with self-deprecating style, reads his slight lyrics
almost apologetically from his poems, stored on his mobile phone. Ben
is also putting together the first London School of Economics (LSE) Literature and Arts Festival at the end of February 09. There's a pause - and more wine - then Ricky Burns.
Bearded, personable, he reads with a lot of energy and verve, and his A
to Z poem shows an intense concern for words and their potential. Mary Edwards
is a sort of rock and roll romantic, but think determination, rather
than lassitude. Her poetry paints small, intimate pictures, as though
you are looking at yourself passing a shop window - and you might not
recognise what you see. Last is Si Baker, life coach and poet, who also runs the Tavistock Writers Group,
a self-help, self-critical group of published and aspiring poets,
dramatists, fiction writers and journalists. He reads quietly but
sonorously, before ending the night with a slightly scurrilous
description of physical love. That sends some in search of another
glass of wine, and others thoughtfully home through the Soho streets.Thursday Night at the Mumford Gallery is a regular, informal, gathering. Future dates include 26 February 09, 5 March 09.(c) Brent Crude - Thursday 19 February 09 - Mumford Fine Art, Rooftop Gallery, 12 D'Arblay Street, Soho, London, W1F 8DU - (c) www.fringereport.comLink to Fringe Report website: Brent Crude's review of the Poetry Night at the Mumford Gallery (20 Feb 2009)

Picasso etching available for acquisition

*See bottom of page for image*Looking to invest in an original, signed, limited edition Picasso? Read on...Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973)Visiteur avec son chien chez unde jeune Femme avec la Celestine ( s. 6995)(Man with dog, Procuress and Nude)This etching is number 192 of the so-called 347 series made by Picasso at the grand old age of 87. Despite the old age of the artist the works are dynamic and amusing - his longevity has taken away none of his creativity. In a 6-month period the artist created 347 etchings - sometimes doing several in the course of a single day. All are dated, signed and numbered. This was a great feat for a man of his age! The work depicts a scene from "La Celestine" which was a 15th century Spanish Classic work. This was a dramatised novel in 21 acts, attributed to Fernando de Rojas who published it in Burgos in 1499. The plot is a simple one: Calisto is in love with Melebea who spurns him. His butler, Sempronio, suggests he pays an elderly lady called Celestine to act as a go-between and matchmaker. Celestina is a very devious person who does contrive to approach Melebea and create a relationship between the two lovers. Sempronio, however, wants a share of the bribe money and in a quarrel with Celestina, kills her. Calisto falls from a ladder and dies - finally Melebea throws herself from a tower in her father’s house. The grief stricken parent is left alone then to bewail his sadness and misfortune. Picasso was fascinated by the story and when commissioned to create a series of etchings for it worked round the clock to complete them. The finished group of "La Celestine" etchings consisted of 66 pieces. The La Celestine works were a large and important section from the 347 series. The copper for this work still exists in the Musee Picasso, Paris, and was donated by Crommelynck.Provenance The collector’s stamp verso is the mark of Henri M Petiet (1894 - 1980). Petiet was one of the most famous art dealers of Paris in the Post War era. He bought the stock of Vollard upon his untimely death and proceeded to become one of the leading print dealers in Paris. The fact that this piece emanates from this source gives authenticity and prominence to it.Original Etching 26 June 1968. (V) , Mouguins
Signed by the artist in pencil with full margins. Edition of 50. There are also 17 artists proofs.

Portraits for a Nation (27 Nov 08- 15 Jan 09) is Mumford Fine Art's first annual charitable exhibition . Featuring portraits by gallery artists, 12.5% of proceeds will be donated to The Artists' Benevolent Institution , which provides grants for financial assistance to professional visual artists in the UK whose work has been known to the public for some time who, through illness, accident or old age, are unable to work and earn a living. The gallery's Art Greeting Cards will also help support The Art Fund (15% of proceeds will be donated). The folded cards each depict an individual image by gallery artists on the front, and are blank on the inside. Individual messages may be printed for a personal touch. Gallery artists included in the selection are: Emily Andersen, Kitty Blandy, Stephen Canino, Michael Cardinali, Amanda Cornish, Ben Erland, Simon Erland, Dame Elisabeth Frink, Lin Jammet and Anastasia Pollard. The gallery's aim for making a contribution to The Artists' General Benevolent Institution (starting today, until 23 December) is £3,500. This includes 12.5% of proceeds from artwork purchases and 15% of art greeting card sales.
